Content writing is writing for online audiences to engage them in different platforms. Businesses and branding agencies look for content writers because they help increase credibility and sell more through the stories they attach to products.
If you want to earn money, content writing is one of the popular skills to offer online. But is the freelancing potential behind content writing worth pursuing?
After finding lots of free time to spend while she’s still in college, Melissa Cabral discovered content writing. Now, she’s a freelance writer/editor, illustrator, and content strategist. On the other hand, Tina Santiago-Rodriguez, owner of the award-winning blog TrulyRichandBlessed.com, tried content writing as a way to supplement her income for her family.
After trying their hands in weaving words for online content, both didn’t let go of content writing ever since. Here are their reasons why.
Work where and when convenient
You can spend your free time doing whatever you want as long as you submit the commissioned content on time! Melissa takes this further, and admits that she also enjoys being able to work from multiple devices, thanks to cloud syncing. She would even write first drafts on her phone on her daily commute since the traffic would keep her stuck for hours.
Choose your workload
While freelancing, you get to be flexible in the amount of work you want to take up at any given time. You also have a say which clients you accept or decline commissions from. Melissa points out that freelancing has really helped her improve her self-esteem, since she’s had to stand up for herself many times to defend how much her services are worth.
Being a freelancer also gives you more room to prioritize your mental and physical health. If things start getting too busy, you have the option to pull back a little bit and give yourself time to breathe and compose yourself before diving back in.
Expand your horizons
Depending on the clients you accept, you get the opportunity to expose yourself to different industries and practices. Tina points out that it’s because of her freelance content writing that led her to other fields of expertise like finance and marketing. Variety also keeps it interesting: Melissa has written for wedding venues’ landing pages, articles about medical equipment, and product descriptions for fancy lamps and fountains.
Diversifying your skill set would eventually yield unique opportunities, and you can eventually branch out and widen the pool of potential industries you can write for.
